Brains, Beauty and Brawn: A Stainless Steel Kitchen

:: Posted by MelW on 06-27-2013

Stainless steel countertops, simply stated, are brains, beauty, and brawn incorporated into one industrial surface. A professional grade surface can withstand pretty much anything you dish out, but cleans up without a lot of fuss. Consider the following, when looking to add these beautifully efficient counters to your kitchen. Stainless steel is a steel alloy that includes about 10.5 percent chromium, leaving it resistant to corrosion: different from normal carbon steel. Other positive attributes of stainless steel are its durability and strength. Choose from a wide array of finishes, like satin (smooth), antique matte, and more. The advantages — you have a kitchen that matches the strength of commercial grade kitchens, plus their stringent standards of cleanliness. Stainless steel countertops are water-resistant and stainless: they easily resist heat and clean up quickly. Looking for a kitchen that lasts? Stainless steel will endure almost a century. Integral sinks and stainless steel backsplashes are sure to please even the purists.

Remember that while stainless steel is stain resistant, it will take some work to keep it free from fingerprints. This is also a metal that is prone to scratches and dents, so it’s best to use a cutting board, to avoid and nicks or cuts. Another great characteristic of stainless steel is that it can be recycled, over and over again, for an extended useful life.

Adding Stainless Steel To Your Design

:: Posted by MelW on 06-25-2013

When looking to add a new design to your home, there are two things that will bring excitement into your existing space and make it pop: unique and beautiful decor. Whether you’re dressing windows, or dividing rooms, you can create a genuine, artistic look when incorporating stylish, decorative screens. Stainless steel panels can be a great way to achieve extreme decor beauty. In order to achieve a celestial and artistic look in any room, try stainless steel panels; surprisingly, they can look much like artistic sculptures and woven laced sheets.

Metal panels are synonymous with stainless steel panels and can be used as space dividers, window treatments, or a backdrop to a sofa or bed. “The metallic material is processed like an embroidery, achieving satin or shiny surfaces, thanks to the inherent qualities of steel, ” said a Caino Design representative. Caino, an interior design firm, has also come up with a way of “using the metallic structure to transmit electrical current and built-in electronics…to develop the concept of ‘no cabling’, with the possibility of integrating lights in an object, thus blurring any distinction between structure and light source. MeLEDs are new lighting systems based on the integration of finely processed thin metal plates and LED technology.” A stainless steel screen can add a beautifully distinct touch to your decor; incorporate light, and you’ve just added a dimension of excitement to your space.

Properties of Stainless Steel Ideal For Kitchen Design

:: Posted by MelW on 06-20-2013

Stainless steel is popular for kitchens, sinks, and other appliances for its simple beauty, durability, and longevity. Usually stainless steel kitchen sinks contain chromium and nickel, which makes them stain and rust-resistant. To further emphasize the irreplaceable qualities of steel, hot pots and pans can be placed in a stainless steel sink without ruining its surface and glass dishes aren’t as likely to break when dropped into a stainless steel sink, because steel is not as dense as stone.

Stainless steel comes in different degrees of thinness. The quality of the steel makes a difference in its durability. Thinner grades of steel will dent, stretch or even rust more easily that a thicker steel. However, because of the amount of noise stainless steel sinks make, insulating pads are used to absorb sound, guard against condensation, and maintain the temperature of the sink water. But overall, these and other properties make stainless steel a great option when considering the design of your kitchen.

Keeping Your Stainless Steel Stainless

Handling your stainless steel with a little TLC can prevent discolorations and stains. Here are a few handy tips on cleaning and maintaining your steel for life. The best way to keep your stainless steel cookware in the best condition is to hand-wash and dry completely before you store it. Some experts think that detergents may have damaging effects on stainless steel finishes, but the effects of dishwashing are still unknown. Try taking your cookware out of the dishwasher before drying it to keep from spotting. Water with high calcium content leaves chalky, white residue on stainless steel kitchen cookware.

In order to get rid of tough, burned-on foods, soak stainless steel pots and pans in warm soapy water for an hour. Boil the soapy water for 10-15 minutes and then wash with a nylon scouring pad. For general cleaning, use a non-abrasive cleaner like Bon Ami or Bar Keepers Friend. Abrasive cleaners are great at removing stuck on foods, but will scratch the surface of your stainless steel kitchen cookware. With your care, stainless steel can last a lifetime.

“Super Stainless Steel?”

:: Posted by MelW on 06-13-2013

New alloys are created to offer superior oxidation resistance, compared to conventional stainless steels. They’re also reasonably priced and constructed with less creep resistance. Alloys have the ability to form protective aluminum oxide scales, instead of chromium oxide scales. Once only available to nickel-based alloys, a combination of creep and oxidation resistance is now available. Nickel-based alloys are more expensive than the new stainless steels.

Alloy 2507, particularly, is a super stainless steel that is created for difficult applications and offers exceptional strength and corrosion resistance. Products that are made from this powerful steel, range anywhere from stainless steel grills to marine applications. It can also be made into stainless steel sheets, stainless steel metal, and stainless steel appliances. Because of its superior corrosion-resistance properties in kitchens and bathrooms, the applications for stainless steel are perfect for use at home.

Stainless Steel Has Many Uses in New Delhi

:: Posted by MelW on 06-11-2013

In New Delhi, the women are in the business of selling their wares, each day for a profit, and are often found carrying heavy todki — or loads of glassware and stainless steel, weighing anywhere between 66 to 132 pounds. After a century of stainless steel sheet metals, stainless steel sheets and other steel products, this popular metal has become more and more difficult for women in Gujarati to sell. Their families have gone door-to-door bartering stainless steel goods in exchange for clothes, for generations. Today, business for the women of Gujarati is waning and the numbers of people that show up at the Sunday market near Indira Gandhi Stadium, where nearly 500 women sell previously-worn goods, is also dissipating.

On a more positive note, conditions have changed with the times, and the Gurajatis have the upper hand in the stainless steel trade. Women are the primary takers for glass and steel plates, and only allow other women into their homes to purchase the wares. With the advent of the microwave, stainless steel’s years of loyal service, in Indian kitchens all over New Delhi, has become a distant memory. While the prices of steel have risen over the years, many women admit that they still need stainless steel plates and utensils to complete everyday tasks, like boiling milk and cooking fish. Though the Gujarati women have a need for metal, they can barely afford it; but the need still remains.

Since 1988, Starland Metals has been in the business of top quality metal manufacturing and parts fabrication.

Stainless Steel Revolutonizes the World

Once alloy steels were developed, an array of different metals also began to surface; each one with its own special properties. However, the unique combination of chromium and carbon brought forth the industry’s most exceptional grade of metal — stainless steel. When experimenting, levels of chromium were added to steel that were either more or less than what was needed to produce stainless. A film usually appeared on the surface of steel when adding chromium at levels of 10-27 percent, in addition to a carbon content of less than 2 percent: a result of the steel reacting with oxygen in the air.  The most interesting thing about this process is that stainless steel gets its non-corrosive, rust-resistant properties, because this film acts as a protective barrier that resists oxidation and heat.

Harry Brearley, a British steel analysis expert, brought stainless steel to Sheffield, England in 1912. He was the first to understand the practical uses of the metal and developed a grade of stainless steel that contained 12.8 percent chromium. While conducting tests, Brearley realized the advantages of a high-strength, rustless metal and discovered that stainless was also resistant to corrosion.  Sheffield soon became the first town to produce a stainless steel product in large quantities. Not only do people use stainless steel in restaurants, today, stainless steel kitchens and bathrooms have become extremely popular, as people find that it is a metal that can be easily dried, cleaned and maintained.  Stainless steel has revolutionized the world, leaving few modern industries unimpacted.

Stainless Steel As A Versatile Metal

:: Posted by MelW on 06-04-2013

Decorators and homeowners are using stainless steel because of its cost-effectiveness, versatility, and easy maintenance. Aesthetically speaking, steel is sleek and clean, sterile and versatile and becoming more and more commonplace in modern and contemporary homes. Stainless steel comes in a number of varieties, finishes, and textures and is popular for kitchen use, because it’s virtually rust-proof and corrosion free.

Stainless steel is used in appliances such as toasters, ovens, stoves, sinks and dishwashers, but not many people have invested in stainless steel counters. The type of stainless steel used for countertops is manufactured from a higher-quality stainless steel than that which is used to make appliances. While stainless steel countertops are made from a heavier steel, it is still susceptible to scratches from things like kitchen tools.

Other steel design ideas include adding plants to stainless steel pots. Additionally, steel cabinets add interest and uniqueness to a kitchen. With stainless steel’s versatility and a variety of textures and colors, it can be used for virtually any surface in the kitchen. Starland Metals have been in the business of top-quality metal manfacturing and stainless steel fabrication since 1988.
